The two sides clashed again in al-Kurmuk two weeks later. In response, the SAF conducted airstrikes in Dilling and Kadugli localities, presumably targeting al-Hilu faction faction forces.Īdditionally, a new frontline emerged in Blue Nile state, where the al-Hilu faction successfully took over villages in al-Kurmuk locality on 26 June, following two days of clashes with the SAF. Building on these gains in the following weeks, the al-Hilu faction overtook territory and SAF bases in at least 10 locations, including bases in Qurayd, Abri, el-Kergil, al-Sarafayah, Tugul, and Umm Heitan. However, at the beginning of June, reports began emerging of the al-Hilu faction overtaking several SAF bases in South Kordofan state. From August 2019 until May 2023, ACLED records only eight political violence incidents involving the group. Since the Abdelaziz al-Hilu faction of the SPLM-N declared a unilateral cessation of hostilities in July 2019 after the ouster of al-Bashir, it had remained relatively inactive in #Sudan’s political violence landscape. On 7 June, in Doolow town of Gedo region, near the border of Ethiopia, two al-Shabaab suicide bombers targeted the ATMIS Ethiopian base and ammunition store. Nearly a dozen al-Shabaab attacks targeting the ATMIS Ethiopian contingent in Bay, Bakool, and Gedo regions were also recorded during the reporting period. Additional attacks in and around Golweyn over the next few days resulted in more casualties among Ugandan forces. On 6 June, al-Shabaab fired mortar shells toward ATMIS Ugandan and Somali forces at a defensive base in Golweyn village, reportedly killing at least three Ugandan soldiers. The majority of al-Shabaab activity targeted the Ugandan contingent in Lower Shabelle, where an attack on 26 May left dozens of soldiers dead in Bulo Mareer town.
